His first story, "Salamander," was published in , when Ibuse was still a student, and by the early s his eloquent use of dialect and his unique prose style had established him as one of the leading figures in the Japanese literary world.

In the years since he has been awarded almost every literary prize in Japan, and on the publication of Black Rain Ibuse was presented with both the Cultural Medal and Japan's highest literary award, the Noma Prize.

Ibuse began serializing Black Rain in the magazine Shincho in January The novel is based on historical records of the devastation caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The book alternates between Shizuma Shigematsu's journal entries and other characters from August 6—15, , Hiroshima, and the present. The present time in the novel takes place several years later, when Shigematsu and his wife Shigeko become the guardians of their niece, Yasuko, and thus obligated to find a suitable husband for her.
