JUSTICIA SECUNDA VAHL PDF

Justicia secunda Vahl belongs to the family of Acanthaceae and is a barely examined species. In Latin America and Africa, the leaves of J. Our extensive macroscopic and anatomical investigations [4] revealed that other closely related species are easily mistaken for J. The aim of this study was to establish Infrared IR spectroscopy as fast and reliable alternative for the proper identification of J. Cut and dried leaves of correctly identified J. In addition, correctly and incorrectly identified samples from the following materials were compared to the database: a greenhouse-cultivated population with origin in Venezuela and 20 voucher specimens from a wide region around the world.

Justicia secunda Vahl is an exotic plant that is used to treat medical problems. We investigated the hepatoprotective and hematological effects of aqueous extracts of J. Leaf extracts were prepared using hot and cold extraction methods to obtain a hot extract of J. Total phenol and flavonoid measurements and antioxidant assays were performed to determine the extract with the greater antioxidant activity.

JSHAE was the more effective extract for treatment of carbon tetrachloride CCl 4 induced hepatotoxicity and hepatotoxicity in rats. Silymarin was used as a standard for comparison.

JSHAE treated animals exhibited white blood cell, red blood cell, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet and procalcitonin levels that were comparable to control animals. JSHAE exhibited no abnormalities. Keywords: Justicia secunda; carbon tetrachloride; hematology; hepatoprotection; histology; liver; rats.

Identification of Justicia secunda Vahl by IR spectroscopy

Background: Sickle cell disease or drepanocytosis is caused by the polymerisation of abnormal haemoglobin S when oxygen tension decreases. This lead to the changes in the shape of red blood cells and anaemia. It has also been postulated that the red cells of patients with sickle cell disease contain a higher than normal concentration of calcium ions. These ions are bound to membrane proteins resulting in dehydration and loss of red blood cell deformability and cell-to-cell adherence. Anthocyanins extracted from some Congolese plants used in traditional medicine against sickle cell disease have recently been shown to have anti-sickling activity in vitro.
